When was the last time any government did anything they didn’t feel like they HAD to do? “Just in case” isn’t the norm…”just enough to look like we give a fuck” would be closer.
No specific risk? Maybe. But there’s a risk, and I’m betting it’s real enough… assuming RT is on the level.

I know they say it’s no big deal…happens every couple hundred thousand years…but consider if magnetic north suddenly pointed south, and how many things would literally operate in reverse because of it. Then think, a couple hundred thousand years ago we had no machines, computers and electrical equipment. Cars. Planes. Military weapons. Nukes. Then try and think of all the things you probably HAVEN’T thought of, because…well, you’re not a theoretical physicist.
